Footy 7s - Rules Explainer

Summer means Footy 7s!

Can’t tell the difference between a point and a behind?
(Trick question, they’re the same thing)

2 teams of 7 players attempt to score points and goals by kicking the ball through the goalposts.

There are 7 positions in a team: 2 x forwards, 2 x backs, 3 x midfielders, with one midfielder being a designated scoring midfielder. Only the 2 forwards and scoring midfielder may score during the game.

The ball can only be disposed of via a kick or a handball. A player is only allowed to bounce the ball once when they are in possession and it must be bounced at the 15 meter mark.

The minimum distance for a mark to occur is 5 meters.

Kicking the ball through the middle two larger posts results in a goal (6 points) being awarded. Kicking the ball between a centre and outside post (a large and a small) results in a single point (or behind). A supergoal with 9 points is awarded in mixed leagues when a female player scores a goal.

The game consists of 2 x 16 minute halves with a 1 minute break at half time.

A team is allowed an unlimited number of players on the interchange bench, and substitutions can be made at any time.

No tackling, bumping or barging is permitted. The opposition may call ‘holding the ball’ by using the 2 handed touch method.
